MY LIFE STORY
(What I Wish to be In the Future Related to
Creative Writing)

I’ve actually always got confused every time I thinking about my future or what would I be after I graduated -- I’ve honestly haven’t thought about that, but I always holding on to the principle that things will work out by themselves, just let it flow and believe that God always have the best plan for us.

If I can tell a bit about myself, I was currently a 4th semester English literature student in one of the private universities in Indonesia called BINUS University. If you ask me why English literature? My answer would as simple as I like to learn more about English since it is my favorite subject during my school life and I hoping that this major can help me in improving my English skills. The other reason is -- honestly, I really hate math so much like I really anti in counting, so I thought we will not be going to count in English literature and that was true actually, so yup that would be my reasons behind this major college decision.

Long story short, I’m doing my university life as an English literature student and for your information, since I graduated from high school in the first year of Covid-19 (Class of 2020), so in my first year being a university student until now (in my 4th semester) I still doing the online classes so- you know it feels like not really productive as much as we do the normal classes, right? Well, I kinda feel thankful about it.

Therefore, when I was on my 3rd semester, we (all the 3rd semester students at that time) got a briefing or meeting regarding what would we going to do on the next semester which is the 4th semester -- the semester that I’m doing now. Basically, we have a chance to choose what kind of streaming (course of interest) that we will live for the next two semester aka until the 5th semester. The course of your interest can be chosen from your own major or outside the department. To be honest, at first, I was interested to choose Culinary and I also already have a friend candidate who also want to choose Culinary, just because we think it would be really fun and we also want to learn how to do a proper cook.

But, for one reason or another, I gave up my intention to take Culinary as my stream and ended up choosing it from my major, which is none other than “Creative Writing”. In creative writing we basically learn how to write a proper writing like fiction story and any kind of writing in a creative way. Honestly, I didn’t know why I ended up choosing creative writing at that time, even though I have zero experience in writing – So I can say that I was brave enough to take this stream.

Until one day, the day I started my college life as a 4th semester English literature student began. In my creative writing class, there are not many students in it. But I don’t think it is a matter because I think the class will be more conducive. At first, I haven’t really struggled with my creative writing class, until finally in the class called “Fiction Writing” we were required to complete a short story project for one semester. Honestly, I’m not really surprised to hear it because I’ve already heard from some of my friends that, in creative writing (just like the name) we will do some project regarding writing and I also think that this is the real definition of “creative writing” – and we have to be prepared to take the risk from what we have chosen. It’s just, I kinda feel panic actually because as I mentioned previously that I don’t have any experience in writing so it’s kinda challenging from me but it’s also fun and interesting at the same time.

It took me two weeks until I finally decided what kind of story I would make later on and I really believed in my idea. Thankfully, my lecturer from the “Fiction Writing” course is also agrees and really appreciates the idea of the story I chose. Even so, there are times when I experience writer’s block during the work on the short story project and I think that is a natural thing for a writer. However, because this short story project, which is also supported by other courses that also require us to write, it makes me think that writing is actually a very exciting thing to do. I feel like- I use my ideas, thoughts, creativity and imagination a lot in taking this creative writing class. In writing, we can even take inspiration from other people’s writings as well as through the movies we watch and the songs we listen to and that’s what makes creative writing interesting. I also immediately thought, if at that time I didn’t take creative writing, maybe I would never try to write something. So, there are many advantages and knowledge that I’ve got in this creative writing which makes me grateful.

So, the question is what I wish to be in the future related to creative writing or am I going to do a job regarding creative writing? The answer is probably yes. As I mentioned previously, now I have more interest in writing, so I think why not to try something new in the future related in creative writing. For now, since I have a lot of tasks about blogging (especially for travel) and some stuffs – so I think I will do more about travel blogging. Because I think, writing a blog is the easiest thing you can do but you also can put your creativity towards it, since you have to design your own blog and on the other hand, we also have to be smart in choosing the right order & style of language for the blog so that it attracts people’s attention to read it. And since I’m the type of person who is follow the mood while do a writing, so I think doing a blog is a suitable work for me, because we can manage it by ourselves like- when is the right time for us to write or publish it to the public. Other than blogging (travel blog), I also kinda interested in doing a job as a content writer. Being a content writer is something that I think can “get in” to my field of interest. But of course, in achieving it, I have to deepen my writing skills and put attention to my common mistakes in writing especially for grammars. I realized that I am lacking in grammar, there are still grammatical errors when I write. So, I really have to learn to be able to write perfectly, both in grammar and vocabulary.

Therefore, that’s all regarding my current life story and what I’m planned to in the future regarding creative writing. I believe everything can be achieve one by one if I also have a big intention to do it. I just hoping that someday, what I’ve learn as a creative writing student can be useful and can be applied in my future writings.
