"The Girl with the Cat Whiskers"

Once upon a time, there was a little 12-year-old girl named Emily. She lives happily with her parents. However, there is one thing about Emily that many children her age may not have. Emily has Vitiligo, where she has many white patches on one area of her body: the legs. This makes her sometimes not confident, but her parents always support her. Emily's parents advised her always to wear long pants to school to avoid bullying towards their daughter.
One day, Emily went to the garden near her house and suddenly saw a girl, perhaps around her age, falling from the bicycle. Emily immediately ran to help the girl. "Are you okay?" asked Emily, "I'm fine, thank you for helping me," said the girl while looking down. "Did something happen to your face?" asked Emily again, "No, I just feel shy ..." "I'm not confident enough to show my face," continued the girl while lifting her head slowly. "I don't see something weird on your face," said Emily, confused, "Don't you think this is weird?" asked the girl, pointing her cheeks. "Oh, do you mean the whiskers? I think it looks cute on you," Emily answered innocently. "Really?" Emily nodded, "Thank you … I didn't expect that," said the girl awkwardly. Not long after, the two little girls heard a scream not far from the garden. "Emily! Emily! Where are you? Lunch is ready!". "Oh, it's my mom. Sorry, I should go home now, nice to meet you … Bye!" said Emily, leaving the girl while running towards her house.

The next day, Emily was playing again in the garden. Then someone poked her shoulder; Emily suddenly turned around, "Aren't you the girl I helped yesterday?" Emily asked. "Hehe, true, I didn't get to tell you my name yesterday. I'm Lana, and you're Emily, right?" said the little girl named Lana while holding her hand. Emily replied. "Oh, hello, Lana. Do you live near here?" Emily asked. "Yes, Emily. Honestly, I just moved, and I need a friend. So, how about starting today, we agree to be friends?" asked Lana politely. "Sure, with pleasure!" Emily answered sincerely.

Since that day, Emily and Lana are getting closer. They always spend their time playing together. Finally, while crying, Emily dared to tell the "difference" between herself and Lana. "It's okay, Emily, we're both the same. We have the uniqueness that distinguishes us from children around our age. And thank you for trusting me," said Lana, encouraging Emily while hugging her tightly. While releasing Lana's hug, Emily asked. "Lana, several times you took me to play with other children, and you looked very confident, different from when we first met. What made you then become confident?". "Well, I became confident since your first impression of me. Then, I also tried to believe in myself. You should learn it from me," Lana replied, looking deeply at Emily. Emily was silent and touched by Lana's words. Two days later, they played in the garden as usual. This time, Lana brought a pink paper bag. "Emily. I brought one of my skirts; I wanted to give it to you because I already have a lot of skirts." Then Lana continued, "Wear this when you start to feel confident." Emily looked at the pink paper bag that Lana gave her and then continued to look at Lana with teary eyes. "Thank you so much, Lana! I will wear it someday!"

It's been a week since they first decided to be friends. Today, Emily chose to wear a skirt that Lana gave her. She ran into the garden with a beautiful smile etched on her lips. Emily finally arrived in the garden, but her smile suddenly disappeared. She didn't see Lana there. "Lana! Lana! Where are you? Why did you leave me?" "I've already worn the skirt you gave me!" Emily shouted as she tried to find Lana but couldn't find her. So, Emily decided to go back to her house while crying loudly. Emily's parents were surprised to see their daughter crying. "Honey, what's wrong?" asked the father. "Daddy, I can't find Lana; she left me," answered Emily while still sobbing. "Who is Lana, Em? I've never heard of you have a friend named Lana?" asked the mother, curious. "She's my friend! She lives nearby, too! The girl with the cat whiskers!" Lana answered loudly. Her parents glance at each other, still confused about what their daughter is talking about. Emily's parents hugged their daughter while comforting her, "It is okay honey. Don't cry … whoever she is, she must be an important friend to you. Hopefully, she can come back soon." said the father, stroking Emily's head. Emily also returned the hug of her parents and immediately began to calm down. "Oh, by the way, look at you … you're wearing a skirt! And it looks perfect on you!" said the mother, cheering up her daughter. Emily then looked at her skirt and said, "This is a skirt that Lana gave me; she wanted me to wear it when I started to feel confident. So, starting today, I will wear a skirt to school!" Her parents start to glance at each other again and then smile sincerely.
